Preface
This volume represents the Proceedings of the International Conference on Boundary and Interior Layers (BAIL 2006) held in Göttingen, July 24th - 28th, 2006. This conference is organized by the Institute of Numerical and Applied Mathematics (NAM) of the Georg-August University Göttingen and by the Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology (AS) Göttingen/ Braunschweig of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The almost biannual conference series has now become a specific event in Applied Mathematics and Computational Fluid Dynamics. At this conference, there are four invited lectures given by internationally well-known scientists: P. Huerre (Paris), M. Stynes (Cork), W. Wall (Munich) and P. Houston (Nottingham). Moreover, there are mainly two parallel sections and a total of five minisymposia addressing various aspects of boundary and interior layers involving both theory and applications. The mini-symposia are a new feature of the BAIL conferences together with open discussions on selected topics of the conference subject. In addition to the invited talks, there is a total of 72 minisymposium and contributed talks. The proceedings contain 56 papers. Many talks represent an interdisciplinary view of the subject with papers ranging from the theoretical formulation and foundation of algorithms or discretization techniques to applications in aerodynamics and related fields. We wish to thank the organizing staff at the German Aerospace Center Göttingen and at the Mathematics Department of the Georg-August University Göttingen for their enormous hard work towards the success of the Conference. Moreover, the Organizing Committee of the BAIL 2006 Conference received support by the International Steering committee chaired by Prof. J. J. H. Miller (Dublin) and the organizers of the minisymposia. Finally, we wish to thank the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Land Niedersachsen, the Committee of the "Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik" (GAMM), the "Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst" (DAAD) and the Graduate School 1023 on "Identification in Mathemical Models" at the Georg-August University for financial support of the BAIL Conference.
